Travelin’ On

King Mouse

Travelin’ On is Scott Blasey’s third solo record and like Greg Joseph, his fellow bandmate from The Clarks, he has used the freedom from his regular band to branch out in a different direction.

Blasey has traded the slick pop-rock that made The Clarks such local heroes in Pittsburgh for a much more laid-back, organic and soulful vibe, and his new approach really pays dividends on tracks such as the acoustic title track and the infectious “Bird on a Wire.”

Indeed, his cover of Sam Cooke’s “Bring It On Home To Me” sets the tone for what is an eclectic and captivating set of songs, which have clearly been influenced by Blasey’s recent relocation from Pittsburgh to Texas. Only “Church of the Open Highway” sounds like it could have been recorded by his day-job band; instead, Travelin’ On is dominated by songs such as the kooky “Baby, You’re My Saving Grace,” the simple R&B of “Sweet Mystery” and the brilliant opener, “Time To Go.”

After all the success The Clarks have achieved, it would have been easy for Blasey to follow that same path with Travelin’ On. Instead, Blasey has taken a different road and even though a minority of fans may not enjoy the journey, there will be plenty of others along for the ride who appreciate his natural gift for songwriting.
