With hoary old favorites like Def Leppard, Whitesnake, and Motley Crüe back in vogue amongst the rock music-buying public, it seems the time is right for young upstarts like Lynam to make an impression.
And that’s exactly what they do with their fifth album Tragic City Symphony. Loud, brash and undeniably melodic, Lynam are clearly children of the ’80s, as the Leppard-esque gang vocals on infectious opener “Is This a Heartbreak or a Loaded Gun?” unashamedly demonstrate.
Cinderella frontman Tom Keifer makes an appearance on the superb “Enemy,” while good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll tunes like “Porn Star,” “White Trash Superstar” and “Save My Soul” avoid the potential trap of being cliché by sheer force of their attitude and melody.
Ballads like “A Million Ways” and “Just Say Anything” slow down the frenetic pace, but “Make It Alright” and the ballsy “Can’t Do Anything” get the band back into familiar rocking territory with fine style.
Enjoyable songs, a self-deprecating image and genuine rock ‘n’ roll attitude make Lynam’s Tragic City Symphony something of a guilty pleasure – it’s like grunge never happened.
