The Greenhornes
The Greenhornes
Telstar
Like their labelmates, The Woggles, The Greenhornes play •60s-style garage rock of the highest order. The Greenhornes• sound, though, is a bit more based in the blues, giving them the feel of a young Rolling Stones (back when they were still interesting), or perhaps The Animals (whose •Inside Looking Out• they cover here). Raucous originals like •Nobody Loves You,• •Can•t Stand It,• and •Shadow Of Grief• easily stand toe-to-toe with impressive covers of the likes of The Spencer Davis Group (•High Time Baby•) and zydeco pioneer Clifton Chenier (•It•s My Soul•). And when the time comes to get slow and spooky, as on •Stay Away Girl,• they do it with an edge that would make Screamin• Jay Hawkins proud. While the band keeps together, there•s a comfortable sloppiness to the songs • which is wholly appropriate, •cause the last thing you want from music like this is for it to be letter-perfect. It•s straight up rock and roll, the kind that far too few bands are making these days. That goodness there are bands like The Greenhornes around to do it up right, and that there•s a label like Telstar to put their records out!
