Dean Wareham and Luna keep on creating twisted New York pop that satisfies so completely, and seemingly effortlessly, that you might get lulled into thinking it’s easy to do. Somehow, I don’t think it is. Energized by the addition of bassist Britta Phillips, this is the groups most realized work since 1995’s Penthouse. Not only a great bass player (she goes from rubber band funk to John Entwistle lines smoothly), Phillips vocal nuances add a depth to the Luna Boys Club that hearkens back to the days of Galaxie 500 and songs such as “Bonnie And Clyde.” Guitarists Wareham and Sean Eden mesh in that son of Tom Verlaine style they have mastered over the years, be it breezy on numbers such as “Lovedust” or the raving, stomping “1995.” Mixed by Mr. Good Fingers Dave Fridman (Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips), which might explain the strange sounds on such songs as “Rememories” and the general creeping twilight mood of the record. Music for cigarettes and coffee, framing late night cynical conversations.
