Nashville Pussy

From Hell To Texas

Steamhammer / SPV

A generation ago, country music made fun of hippies, long hair, and marijuana. Nowadays the genre is as big a proponent of a good buzz as any Haight Ashbury hipster ever was. Nashville Pussy rides firmly in the serious party groove, playing speed metal country with no apologies for any bad habits that they glorify. The growling voice of lead singer Blaine Cartwright pounds out complex lyrics over a surprisingly well-mixed and melodic background laid down by drummer Jeremy Thomson. Bass and supporting guitar come from Ruyet Suys and Karen Cuda, and I ask you: when’s the last time you saw two hot babes playing metal?

The press sheet reveals that Nashville Pussy uses the same recording equipment that Willie Nelson uses, but they are about as far from old Willie’s sound as Metallica is from the Beatles. The ties to roping and riding are thin, the country angle comes more from their white cowboy hats and anti-ballads of excess and escapades. Songs like “Drunk Driving Man” and “The Late Great USA” read like blue-collar country but sound like amped-up rock. Nashville Pussy is highly recommended if you’ve forgotten how to do the Cotton-Eyed Joe, and are looking to settle for a bar fight instead.
