The (International) Noise Conspiracy

Bigger Cages, Longer Chains

Epitaph/Burning Heart

Though the Hives may be Sweden’s best-known garage rock export, it’s the (International) Noise Conspiracy who does a better job of appropriating the sounds of Old Detroit. Just listen to the title track’s epileptic saxophone twitch, sounding like an outtake from the Stooge’s “Funhouse” sessions, but with Iggy singing from John Sinclair’s notebook. Or the minimalist Motown bump and thump that builds to pure chaotic release on “When Words Are Not Working.” Your ass will move, don’t fight it, it’s inevitable.

While it is true that all the tracks exhibit the danceable punk T(I)NC has become known for, at times the groove turns into a rut and starts to wear thin. This is exactly why the cover of N.E.R.D.’s “Baby Doll” comes as such a breath of fresh air. In the midst of screaming political salvos the song stands as a subdued, subtle come-hither plea. It’s one of the band’s best recent efforts and is sure to draw in curious, new listeners who might take to the political messages to heart or go out and search for the inspirations behind the band’s sound. Hey, two birds with one stone!
