Polaroids: A Greatest Hits Collection

Columbia

Shawn Colvin’s music is part folk, part country and part AOR; it’s a curious blend represented on the singer/songwriter’s retrospective showcase of a career that began singing back-up vocals on Suzanne Vega’s “Luka.”

Polaroids: A Greatest Hits Collection covers all of Colvin’s albums, from debut Steady On to the most recent Whole New You. From “Round Of Blues,” which recalls Joni Mitchell, to the jaunty, pop-flavored “Whole New You” and the gritty “Get Out Of This House,” the range of Colvin’s styles are showcased here. “Sunny Came Home,” from Colvin’s breakthrough record, A Few Small Repairs, is her biggest hit, but her penchant for covers is also demonstrated, with The Police’s “Every Little Thing (He) Does Is Magic” and The Beatles’ “I’ll Be Back” ably interpreted.

Cerebral, introspective and spirited, Polaroids: A Greatest Hits Collection is a worthwhile snapshot of a talented artist’s best and most diverse moments.
